Plans to progress to the next stage of the Three Bridges Improvement Scheme have been approved.

Crawley Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed to recommendations allowing the progression of the scheme at its meeting on Wednesday (21 March).

Following an extensive programme of engagement with key stakeholders and residents, the council will lead the delivery of the scheme’s detailed design, which will take account of feedback highlighted by residents at the information sessions.

The developed design will include extensive traffic modelling work to assess the impact of the proposed Eastern Access and station forecourt improvements.

The scheme is being led by the council, in close partnership with West Sussex County Council, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, Network Rail and GTR Southern as part of the Crawley Growth programme.

Funding of £1.5 million has already been allocated to the scheme from the council’s capital programme and a further £393,759 of Section 106 funding, which is reserved for use to improve public access to Three Bridges station will also be added to the project.  £1.1 million of Community Infrastructure Levy funding has also been ring-fenced as a further contribution to the scheme.

Once the detailed design is finalised, the council will undertake a further period of public consultation, highlighting amended areas of the design.

The council and its partners aim to improve access in and out of the station, while transforming the public realm and strengthening sustainable transport connections to other areas around the town.

The project proposes additional parking spaces, an enlarged taxi rank, a dedicated public vehicle waiting area, upgraded bus shelters, a new eastern pedestrian access along Station Hill and a new forecourt at the front entrance of the station, offering greatly improved access by pedestrians and cyclists.

Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development, Councillor Peter Smith, said: “Three Bridges is a hugely important project in the Crawley Growth Programme and we want to make sure that we take all the feedback we’ve received into consideration and made changes to the concept design where possible.

“I am excited to be moving this project forward and look forward to seeing the detailed design once it is completed.”
