Crawley’s independent retailers are already beginning to reap the benefits of a free, innovative, training and support programme introduced by Crawley Borough Council, in partnership with Crawley College and Solent University.

The Small Independent Retail Training and Support Programme aims to enhance the success of local businesses in the area by offering hands on support to gain new knowledge and skills to improve results.

A series of themed workshops – including space planning, visual merchandising, retail & digital marketing, targeting the customer, buying for profit and first impressions - were delivered from October to December, directly benefitting 15 local independent retail businesses.

Further sessions will be held in stores during January and February, with those businesses looking for more bespoke advice encouraged to apply for a special range of mentoring sessions.

Any independent retailers who take part in the sessions are eligible to apply for a shop front grant to improve and refurbish their premises.

The grant is available for up to 75 per cent of the improvement works with a maximum contribution of £4,000, including VAT.

The closing date for submissions for the grant is February 1st, so participating businesses are encouraged to act fast.
