Work on the new play area in Memorial Gardens begins next week.

From Monday 23 September, the play area will be closed and fenced off to start the initial stages of this project, which will consist of removing old equipment and laying a new surface.

The site will be closed over the autumn/winter period to complete the full restoration of the play area, with the new play space being opened in the New Year.

The project, which is being part funded by County Mall, includes the restoration and rehoming of the Queen’s Mosaic, which was previously in Queens Square, to the new picnic area.  The picnic area will also feature a water bottle filling station. The new play area will have 15 pieces of new equipment including a wheelchair swing.

Cabinet member for Wellbeing, Councillor Chris Mullins, said: “I’m delighted to see the plans for Memorial Gardens coming along so quickly, especially with the addition of a water refilling station that visitors can use for free.

“I’m looking forward to seeing each step of the development come together to build a place our residents and visitors will love”
