Delivering more homes for local people

Over the past few weeks, there has been a hive of activity on the former Crawley College car park, to bring forward another exciting town centre development. 

The scheme, owned and led by Crawley Borough Council, will deliver 98 affordable apartments over 8 storeys including associated parking and landscaping.

Regus to locate on Manor Royal

Clearbell Capital, the private equity real estate fund manager, has announced it has let 27,309 sq. ft to Regus at CC3, Churchill Court in Manor Royal.

The serviced office provider has signed a new 15-year lease with break in year 10 on the whole building and will pay an annual rent of £682,201, equating to £25.50 per sq. ft (£274 per sq m).

First Crowdfund Crawley project reaches its target

A project on Crowdfund Crawley has already reached its funding target, just a month after launching.

The Caroline Haslett Memorial Project was the first project to be uploaded to the Crowdfund Crawley website and reached its target of £713 with pledges from the public, West Sussex County Council and Growing a Greener Britain.

The project involves the 'adoption' of a landmark urban pylon and its surroundings for a public realm memorial to women's equality champion and electrical engineer Dame Caroline Haslett (1895-1957) at a site near her birthplace in Three Bridges.

Crawley schools scoop top prizes at science awards

Students from schools in Crawley scooped several major prizes in the South East’s most prestigious science and engineering competition for young people, with two groups going on to represent the region in the national finals next March.

Pupils from Oriel High School, Hazelwick, Gatwick School and St Wilfrid’s School picked up a number of awards – including that of regional Young Scientist of the Year, at the annual Big Bang Fair South East at the South of England Showground.

Strong speaker line-up at Crawley breakfast event

An exciting group of speakers was assembled from CITB, CoTrain, Wilmott Dixon and Crawley Borough Council for the business breakfast event last month at the Arora Hotel.

Topics included how they aim to add social value to new developments and why working together is so important to achieve their priorities.

Crawley is a vibrant town, with key schemes in development, and the council is determined to collaborate with developers to enhance the work being carried out across the borough, guaranteeing a better result for the local community.

Major proposals unveiled to upgrade Gatwick Airport station

The transformation of Gatwick Airport station has moved an important step closer after a planning application was submitted for a major redevelopment.

Network Rail, in partnership with Gatwick Airport Ltd, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and the Department for Transport, has submitted proposals to reduce congestion and improve passenger experience at the station, which serves 19m passengers a year – up from 7.5m 20 years ago.

Crawley scheme boosts sustainable transport links

Connectivity for both cyclists and pedestrians has been improved thanks to a £500,000 Crawley Growth Programme (CGP) scheme.

A 1km-long, shared use cycleway has been built, connecting Station Hill in the west along Worth Park Avenue to Ridley’s Corner in the east and along sections of Worth Road.

Haslett Avenue and Worth Park Avenue traffic signals have also been upgraded as part of the scheme so that all the cycle crossing points are fully Toucan controlled, ie, are shared between cyclists and pedestrians.

New Deal for Manor Royal

The Manor Royal BID Company has signed a new deal with Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council aimed at supporting local businesses and boosting economic growth. The signing of the Manor Royal Deal comes on the back of the recent vote by businesses to renew the Manor Royal BID (Business Improvement District) and the successful Crawley Growth Programme bid to secure an investment package of £60m for the town.

Bandstand to be reopened by Crawley Millennium Concert Band

The town’s Victorian bandstand will be reopened on Saturday (16 June) with a performance from the Crawley Millennium Concert Band.

The bandstand, which has been relocated to the Memorial Gardens, has been refurbished and restored to its former beauty by Leander Architecture, a specialist decorative blacksmith.

The work, which has been funded by Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, includes:

  • Repairs to the columns, arches and roof
